A new release of tangoGPS is out
A new version of tangoGPS is released. Two major milestones have been
achieved:
- layout improvements for both small and big screens
- addition of route tracks
Layout Changes
The user interface has been revamped which largely improves user
experience on small screens like on handheld devices like the
Openmoko phone as
well as on medium sized screens like on netbooks and big screens like
the 21" LCD on your desk.
The tabs have been replace with an info pane on the right. The info
pane is opened and closed with a new button in the toolbar or
alternatively by hitting 'm' on your keyboard. On small screens you
have now better usage of the screen because the tabs are gone and on
larger screens you can have the information open together with the map.
Below is a screenshot of what it now looks like. The map on the
screenshot is
OpenCycleMap.org.
It is a fantastic map created by Andy Allen and Dave Stubbs which is
great not only for cycling but for hiking too.

Route Tracks
A new feature introduced with this version are
Route Tracks. You can now fetch a
route track from three different web services with two simple clicks on
the map. The tracks are automatically saved in the track directory and
can be reloaded at a later time.
To get a route track click on the map to bring up the menu and select
from "ways & routes" the sub-item "get route" as in this screenshot:
Map Menu
Once you have done this the following dialog will appear:
Route Dialog

In this dialog click on the "
Pick"
buttons to select start and end
point of your route. Then select your service and click
"OK"
to fetch the route.
The map will then automatically zoom and center to show the whole track:

There are three route services:
- yournavigation.org, a
fully open source service based on OpenStreetMap
and using the gosmore routing engine. Pretty decent results for routes
up to 50 miles. Don't use it for cross country trips, the server
currently has not enough RAM (November 2009). More info can be found on
the OSM wiki.
- OpenRouteService.org,
is being developed by Pascal Neis and is also based on Openstreetmap.
The routing engine is quite sophisticated but currently not open, yet
it is capable to calculate longer trips. The website offers several
additional features and is worth to check it out.
- gnuite.com is a service run by
John Costigan, the developer of maemo-mapper. This service is based on
google maps.

Hi!thanks again for this new release!
So my wich for th e1.0: save tracks as GPX!
#1.1 - Marcus 2009-11-23 20:15 - (Reply)
I'll see what I can do.

Yeah thx! I think this could be really appreciated by all the people how use tango to contribute to OSM for whom they are forced, for the moment, to use a script for each exported track before to be able to upload their tracks...

Small vote for this even if I don't have problem with converting from log file and maybe some button for making mark ( in GPX format). For marking point (pub, shop). Don't need text, just mark would be enought. This only thing is missing in TangoGPS :-)
#1.1.1.1.1 - Loudmilia 2009-11-24 20:04 - (Reply)
According to Garth, would be nice to be able to save tracks on .gpx format (conversion is not realy a problem (or maybe a laziness question), but would be easier when tracks were directly under .gpx)
#1.1.1.1.1.1 - kayle 2009-11-24 20:35 - (Reply)
Yes, i understand. I just want add vote for saving direct into GPX even I don't miss this function.
And now I see, or don't see tags in my reply:
button to make mark ([wpt lan="" lot=""] [/wpt] tags in GPX file format)

Looking forward to test this new release, which seems quite good!!
Thanks!

I think TangoGPS is one of the best GPS applications for Linux, so a big thanks for its development.
But there is one issue which eventually forced me to stop using it - ZOOM ON SCROLL. When one drives a car with a netbook placed between front seats, it is impossible to operate TangoGPS, as every touch to its touchpad causes un-predictable map scaling. Please remove that feature (or make it switchable) and add one-key short-cuts for basic functions and this will greatly improve its usability on laptops and netbooks (without attached mice).
Thanks again for great application.

There are several keyboard shortcuts already:
- PageUp / PageDown: zoom
- keys 'i', 'o': zoom
- key 'a' : activate autocenter
- key 'm': toggle info window
Plus:
- Ctrl+left click zooms in
This last one is especially for touchpads. A command line option to deactivate the scroll would be possible...

Great news.
I would suggest to pay more attention on functions required when the GPS device is on the move. That means that there is no Internet connection (mostly), and the user has difficulties (not enough time for example) to operate the program.
For me the most important functions were:
1. start/stop track saving;
2. zoom in about +/-2 range to see where I am going.
What I did NOT need were:
1. changing map type - I did not have all map types pre-downloaded, so this gave me just blank screen;
2. any actions on scroll.
It's obvious that other people have their own requirements, so this should be configurable options.
Thank you.

Hi!
I have some feature ideas:
Ability to configure the speed digit in the map area , font size and ability to turn it off. It's too big for openmoko displays, cause redraws and is imo only in the way while walking.
Ability to re-download tiles Two reasons. 1) For extending OSM, I want to update only the parts I have been editing, without deleting the whole cache. 2) In case of corrupt tiles, (had this with a prior release, had to download all tiles again to fix it)
Message improvement A way to delete read messages? (How long do they stay anyway? =)
Get route improvement Route service always defaults to first in list (a.t.m. yournavigation.org) It would be better to set the last used one as default.
Driving mode - lock screen so only panning and zooming works. On touchscreen it's sometimes difficult to maintain a drag motion without loosing contact. If contact is lost, it's often (on moko) percieved as a click, causing menu to display and involuntary pick a menu option at random.
